Our commitment to Stewardship means pursuing good environmental practice, making sure that our activities in the communities in which we operate are handled sensitively; providing a safe working environment; and taking a sustainable, long term view in our actions.

Examples of The Crown Estate and Stewardship include:

Corporate Responsibility (CR) Framework

In 2004 we published our first CR report, which superseded and expanded on our earlier document 'Stewardship in Action'. We are committed to improving the stewardship of our estate in terms both of its significant historical and environmental features and our role in the communities where we operate. Our CR framework brings together these various dimensions and will include clearly defined and measurable objectives. Dinah Nichols, who has special responsibility for environmental matters at board level, is a member of the CR committee which has been established to act as a focal point for our actions.

Environmental Management System

We are taking forward the establishment of an environmental management system that will be implemented across the whole of our portfolio. Benchmarks and performance indicators have been established as a means of demonstrating the delivery of improvements across the broad spectrum of our business and activities.

Marine Stewardship

We are committed to maintaining our active programme of marine stewardship which embraces marine environmental research, community projects, heritage and culture and raising awareness of the importance of marine issues.

Mining

The Bowers Trial Mine on Portland is an innovative project which will maintain the important supply of Portland stone while reducing the amount of open cast mining, which has a detrimental effect on the visual environment.
