Corporate responsibility 2006 - 07 objectives and targets

 


As part of our continuing development of our CR strategy we have adopted a longer term and more strategic approach to target setting

1 The way we do business


Long-term objective
Integrate CR considerations into procurement and supply chain management practices, focusing on prioritised suppliers including managing agents.

Targets
  • Develop and launch a detailed sustainability design checklist for inclusion in the contractual specifications issued to design teams, identifying the criteria and standards that must be considered in all direct developments over 10,000 square feet.
  • Develop and launch a construction sustainability checklist for inclusion in the contractual agreements issued to contractors, identifying the criteria and standards that must be implemented on site, for directly commissioned construction projects over £1m.
  • Adapt the urban Environmental Performance Index monitoring tool for use across other estates so as to evaluate the environmental performance of all managing agents according to appropriate criteria.

2 Our customers


Long-term objective
To develop a new customer brand to act as a focal point for further initiatives to enhance customer experience.

Targets
  • To deliver new business partnering strategies to support brand and customer vision.
  • Enhance management practices within the residential portfolio of the rural estate by producing a tenants’ handbook and a regular bulletin.
Long-term objective
Work with our customers, encouraging them to act responsibly with regard to the environment and local communities.

Target
  • Engage with tenants as appropriate to encourage and assist them to bring Sites of Special Scientific Interests into favourable condition by 2010.

3 Our people


Long-term objective
Ensure the health, well-being and fair treatment of all employees, rewarding them for their contributions to business success, and investing in their continuing development.

Target
  • To appoint a new occupational health service provider and begin the first phase of implementing our new occupational health and safety strategy.
Long-term objective
Raise awareness of CR and environmental issues amongst employees, and provide them with appropriate training to deliver good practice.

Targets
  • Hold at least two structured seminars for internal employees on topics related to the CR Objectives and Targets.
  • To raise awareness of The Crown Estate's CR commitments and performance amongst employees.
  • in all different parts of the estate.
  • Provide diversity awareness training for at least 75% of our employees.

4 The environment around us


Long-term objective
Monitor resource use, improve resource efficiency and implement environmentally preferable waste management measures.

Targets
  • Urban managing agents to achieve a score of at least 75% against the Foundation Criteria of the Environmental Performance Index. This sets out requirements for efficient use of natural resources, reducing emissions, curbing waste and increasing recycling.
  • Complete the measurement of energy and water use in directly managed properties with a view to setting targets for reduction in 2007/08.
  • Achieve a 5% reduction in landlord only energy use at Crowngate shopping centre, in Worcester.
Long-term objective
Develop and implement a carbon management strategy to mitigate The Crown Estate's contributions to climate change across the entire portfolio.

Targets
  • Undertake a pilot study across all estates to investigate the opportunities for more effective carbon management and accounting within The Crown Estate's varied portfolio.
  • Complete a flood risk assessment across relevant parts of The Crown Estate using available data.
Long-term objective
Manage and control pollution risks and improve the conservation and heritage of our natural and built environment.

Targets
  • Update the environmental plans for rural estates to address enhancement of landscape, historical and cultural features and habitats.
  • To formulate, where appropriate, site specific action plans with particular regard to the future requirements of the Water Framework Directive.
  • Meet the English Nature target to bring 95% of SSSI's under The Crown Estate's own direct management in England to be in favourable condition by 2010.

5 The wider community


Long-term objective
Review The Crown Estate's contributions to sustainable communities and ensure that these result in positive benefits for society.

Target
  • Launch the employee volunteering scheme and monitor the number of hours spent by staff on volunteering.
