Current leasing opportunities

We take a collaborative approach to the ocean energy sector.

Background

We have world class test and demonstration facilities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland waters which enable technology developers to install single or multiple machines in a variety of site conditions. To complement these, we offer the opportunity to access seabed for wave projects of up to 3 MW or tidal current projects of up to 30 MW. Applications can be made at any time until further notice.

As part of designing the leasing, we have engaged with the Statutory Nature Conservation Bodies (SNCBs) in relation to our duties as Competent Authority under the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2010 (as amended) and the Offshore Marine Conservation (Natural Habitats) Regulations 2007 (as amended) (jointly referred to as the “Habitats Regulations”). We do not consider that offering the opportunity to access seabed for wave projects of up to 3MW or tidal current projects of up to 30 MW across England, Wales and Northern Ireland waters constitutes a ‘plan’ under the Habitats Regulations because we do not know the number of applications which will be submitted or the locations of any proposed sites. Therefore, at this stage, we have not undertaken a plan-level Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA). We will keep this position under review as applications are received and will continue to work closely with the SNCBs.
