Improving understanding of key marine issues has always been important to furthering good management of the marine estate. The focus is on supporting a targeted range of appropriate learning initiatives as well as enhancing visiting, living, and working on the marine estate.
In accordance with our Marine Biodiversity Action Plan, we are committed to furthering the conservation of priority species and habitats at national and local levels, and the integration of biodiversity into our plans, policies and programmes.
Although there is no legal liability on landowners or local authorities to ensure the foreshore is cleaned of litter, we take this subject very seriously and for many years we have been a supporter of various schemes aimed at reducing the amount of litter accumulating within the marine environment. This includes the Marine Conservation Society's beachwatch and adopt-a-beach campaigns, as well as The Green Blue's recycling initiative.
Assisting the understanding of good marine estate management is fundamental to the way we manage the seabed and foreshore around the UK. Examples of these types of project include production of best practice guides to help promote responsible behaviour within the marine environment, studies to support the development of future management options and applied research related specifically to our property.
