Plans for new Wiltshire homes submitted

The Crown Estate has submitted a planning application for a new housing scheme at a site next to Lay Wood, Devizes.

19 June 2013

The planning application, submitted following consultation with the local community, provides for up to 260 new homes, both market and affordable, at a site next to Lay Wood, Devizes. The plans also provide:

  • Improvements to the canal area and landscaping to create an attractive edge to the town and a new local park
  • New recreation and play areas with nearly half of the site given over to new green areas and community open space
  • Funding to improve local services and infrastructure
  • Improving cycle and pedestrian connections to the town centre
  • A new roundabout access and improved crossing facilities to help slow existing traffic speeds on Horton Road
  • Access designed to facilitate a future link to the A361 through the proposed employment site.

The proposals provide an alternative to other recent housing plans in helping to meet future housing need in the area and seek to address a number of issues highlighted by local councils and other local bodies.

Steve Melligan, Strategic Land Manager, said: "Our scheme offers an excellent alternative location for new homes and has been informed by our consultation with the local community and detailed technical work."

The 17 ha site lies adjacent to Lay Wood between Horton Road and the Kennet and Avon Canal and is part of our 4,000 ha Devizes estate.
