Our Space Your Place

Our Space Your Place will invite students to submit plans for running a retail or other business venture at one of CrownGate’s units, giving young entrepreneurs access to an estimated 500,000 potential customers per month. The project will also see applicants benefit from expert mentoring and training provided by experienced business professionals from the University of Worcester’s Business School and Barclays.

Five business proposals will be shortlisted for a Dragon’s Den-style final presentation in May 2016, with winners opening their very own business next summer.

Our Space Your Place ran for the first time last year with bespoke t-shirt printing venture, Sling Prints, emerging victorious.

Hannah Milne, Head of The Crown Estate’s Regional Portfolio said: “Developing skills and nurturing entrepreneurialism can play huge roles in helping people achieve their personal aspirations, whilst, on a broader scale, equipping the next generation with the tools they’ll need to drive economic growth across the country. Our Space Your Place provides a fantastic opportunity for young people to develop the knowledge and experience they’ll need to succeed as future business leaders and we’re really looking forward to seeing them establish their ideas over the coming months.”

Dr. David Bozward, Senior Lecturer in Entrepreneurship at the University of Worcester, said: “At the University of Worcester we believe that entrepreneurship provides opportunities for our students, enhancing their career prospects after graduation, empowering them to start their own business and also enabling them to cope with an ever-changing world. The Our Space Your Place competition enables students to learn amazing skills through the process of starting a retail business over the summer holidays.”

Maria Gardner, Barclays Relationship Support Manager for Worcester, said: “Barclays is fully committed to the entrepreneurship agenda and welcomes the opportunity to work with a range of local stakeholders to support this exciting initiative. With a network of business managers across the UK, we recognise the importance SME’s play in the success of the UK economy. Working closely with local Universities to generate spin out businesses is a great way to identify entrepreneurs of the future. Creating a strong business plan is a long way from running a successful business, but hopefully with the right support and advice, the students and newly created business will survive and thrive during 2016.”
