The Crown Estate and The AJ launch future office competition

The Crown Estate has joined forces with The Architects’ Journal, the AJ, to launch a new architectural competition on the office of the future.

14 July 2016

The AJ/Crown Estate Future Office contest is open to all UK-based architectural practices. It asks entrants to consider how inspiring and effective workplaces will operate from 2021 onwards based on changing ways of living and working and new technology.

The competition will have two main stages. The first is an open ideas competition asking designers to respond to the theoretical challenge of designing an office space operating five to 10 years in the future.

The best entries will be shortlisted before six winners are selected to take part in the second stage – a two day charrette focusing on the future of one of The Crown Estate’s most prominent existing West End buildings.

Each of the six practices or architects taking part in the charrette will receive a £1,000 honorarium for their time and effort and both winners and shortlisted entries will be publicised by the AJ and The Crown Estate.

James Cooksey, Director of Central London at The Crown Estate said: “This is about challenging our thinking in an office market that is constantly evolving in a globally competitive market. We want to promote the best talent, drive innovation and support great design to stay ahead of the game in delivering outstanding office space in a world-class location.”

AJ Managing Editor Will Hurst said: “Whether it relates to the 3D printed office, managing the impact of climate change or engineering serendipitous encounters among staff, workplace design is changing fast. We’re asking the UK’s best architects to consider such trends and imagine what comes next.

“This is an opportunity not to be missed – a unique client boasting a £6 billion central London portfolio is on the lookout for new talent.”

First stage submissions must be received by September 26th.

The AJ and The Crown Estate will then select a shortlist of 10-15 teams who will present their designs to a panel of judges on Thursday 13th October. The final selection of six teams will take part in a charrette held on the afternoon/evening of Monday 31st October and all day on Tuesday 1st November.
