05 October 2016

The BCO annual awards, now in their 24th year, recognise quality in office design and functionality and set the benchmark for excellence in workplaces. This year, The Crown Estate has picked up the President’s Award for its outstanding contribution to the property industry.

The accolade comes at a time of significant redevelopment for The Crown Estate, which is currently undergoing a £1.5 billion investment programme across its Central London portfolio.

In summarising its decision, the judges stated: “[The Crown Estate] has outperformed the IPD criteria for the past few years; it continues to create great places to work in for all sorts of occupiers – from start-ups to global institutions – and to enhance the environment for the public as a whole. It will also continue to lead the way and set the benchmark to the other estates and landlords. It is fair to say that others have looked and learnt and as such we have all benefited and that is why they are a worthy winner of the 2016 BCO President's Award.”

Our approach has been guided by steadfast focus on creating not just great buildings, but by working as hard on the space around the buildings”

James Cooksey, Director of Central London at The Crown Estate

James Cooksey, Director of Central London, received the award on behalf of The Crown Estate and said “Our approach has been guided by steadfast focus on creating not just great buildings, but by working as hard on the space around the buildings. It is essential we create cohesive yet striking additions, not island sites. Our latest development – and most ambitious to date – St James’s Market, is a perfect example, raising the bar and re-connecting a lost area to prime St James’s.”

The accolade follows previous awards that recognise The Crown Estate as a direct enabler and driver of best practice development projects:

  • 2015 awarded 'Developer of the Year' at the Property Awards
  • 2015 awarded the Estates Gazette award for 'Retail and Leisure Company of the Year'
  • 2015 awarded 'National Green Apple Champion' award for Environmental Best Practice in Estate Management
  • 2015 10 New Burlington Street awarded 'Best Office' and 'Best Mixed-Use Development' at the UK Property Awards
  • 2010 'Regent Street Vision' awarded the Mayor's Award for Excellence in Planning
