Press release
DUNSTER REPUTATION PUT FIRMLY ON THE MAP
28 July 2010
The Crown Estate’s Dunster estate is hosting a guided walk on Tuesday 3 August to launch and celebrate the recent designation of Dunster as a ‘Walkers are Welcome’ village. The designation strengthens Dunster’s reputation as a fantastic place for visitors to come and enjoy the outdoors.
The walk will be guided by The Crown Estate’s Andy Player, countryside manager for the Dunster estate, who said: “Dunster really is a great place for walking. We have fantastic countryside trails for walkers of all abilities to enjoy, from the all-access Tall Trees Trail thorough to longer walks across more challenging terrain.”
Walkers wishing to take part should meet at the Yarn Market in Dunster, at 1:45pm on Tuesday 3 August, for a starting time of 2pm. It will take approximately three hours to cover the route through the Dunster estate and forest. Highlights will include Dunster Deer Park, Bats Castle Iron Age hillfort and the tallest tree in England.
‘Walkers are Welcome’ is a unique community-led accreditation scheme for places that are simply great places for walking. The scheme has rapidly grown since its launch in 2007, and Dunster joins 47 other ‘WAW’ communities across the country.
Dunster met six conditions in order to be designated as a ‘Walkers are Welcome’ community which included a 460 signature demonstration of local support, showed a firm commitment to walkers and demonstrated solid actions to ensure that footpaths and facilities for walkers are well maintained.
The driving force behind the ‘Walkers are Welcome’ accreditation was local businessmen Antony Brunt of the Yarn Market Hotel and Cliff Nicholson of Spears Cross Bed and Breakfast. Their businesses and other local companies have shown a firm commitment to meet the needs of walkers. Cliff said: “I’m delighted that Dunster has been recognised as a place that delivers everything that walkers need to enjoy the countryside. The Crown Estate’s network of walking trails has been key to securing the status.”
