NEW MARINE AQUACULTURE AWARDS LAUNCHED

28 February 2008

Following the success of its annual awards for salmon farmers, The Crown Estate has widened the scheme to include the whole of Scotland’s marine aquaculture industry.

The awards reward innovation and best practice in Scottish aquaculture and will recognise operators who employ the highest standards of husbandry; offer innovative training programmes; support local communities; and manage their businesses with a high level of environmental awareness.

New categories have been added this year to reward individuals, with awards for Farm Manager of the Year and Aquaculture Ambassador. Awards for processors, retailers and suppliers are also included for the first time.

Alex Adrian, Offshore Operations Manager for Scotland at The Crown Estate, said the industry-backed scheme reflects The Crown Estate’s recognition of the importance of the aquaculture industry in Scotland.

“The 2006 and 2007 salmon farm awards highlighted the best practice and innovation that has been developed here in Scotland,” he said. “We’re keen to see the whole of the Scottish marine aquaculture industry receive the same recognition as is enjoyed by salmon farmers and look forward to celebrating the top-quality products and standards that make the industry renowned across the world.”

Doug McLeod, Chairman of the Association of Scottish Shellfish Growers (ASSG), welcomed the expansion of the aquaculture awards to include the shellfish sector.

“We are pleased that the molluscan cultivation industry has been recognised as part of the aquaculture awards,” he said. “This recognition is part of the growing understanding that aquaculture is a diverse and multi-faceted industry, encompassing much more than just salmon. These awards will reward effort, expertise and success in our dynamic and expanding sector, and the ASSG is delighted to be associated with the event.”

The awards are open to all companies involved in the Scottish marine aquaculture industry and are free to enter. They will be presented at an awards ceremony and dinner at The Hub in Edinburgh on 26 June 2008.

Entry forms and further information are available from this website or by telephoning 0131 557 5767.
