Press Release
BUILDING THE FUTURE WITH THE CHILDREN OF SOHO PARISH SCHOOL
20 January 2009
Children of Soho Parish School, London W1, will place an exclusive ‘time capsule’ into the basement area of Regent Street’s Quadrant 3 redevelopment at the site of the former Regent Palace Hotel, on Wednesday 20 January 2010.
The Quadrant 3 project will restore one of the UK’s largest collection of Grade I listed art deco spaces – the historic Atlantic Bar & Grill, Titanic Restaurant and Chez Cup – to their former glory. It is the largest office development currently underway in the West End, bringing 25,000 m² (270,000 ft²) of new office, restaurant, retail and residential space to Regent Street and creating a 4,100 m² (44,000 ft²) public realm area; after Trafalgar Square, this will represent the most significant addition to London’s public realm seen in the West End over the last thirty years.
The primary school children will be escorted through a ‘safe zone’ down to basement level, where they will place some of their work into a solid steel capsule which is to be buried in Chez Cup and unearthed in fifty years’ time. The items will illustrate and record the children’s perspective of society today with a particular emphasis on sustainability and the environment such as poems, short stories and images.
Quadrant 3 includes a pioneering environmentally sustainable fuel cell and combined cooling heat and power plant. It forms part of Regent Street’s broader Quadrant redevelopment which will also see Alrov Group create a luxury five-star hotel at the site of the former Café Royal. Since 2002 The Crown Estate has been investing over £750 million regenerating Regent Street to create an international destination of quality, heritage, style and success.
