NEW HUB HAS PULLING POWER FOR BROOKLAND YOUNG PEOPLE

15 April 2009

The young people of Brookland Village and neighbouring Romney Marsh Villages are set to enjoy a new activity Hub thanks to the fund raising endeavours of local people and the generosity of The Crown Estate.

‘The Hub’, providing young people with a place to meet, play areas for football, basketball and other activities, was initially identified by the local parish council as an urgent requirement for local young people in its 2005 village plan. However, the council lacked the land and money to provide such a facility.

The first hurdle was overcome when The Crown Estate came forward offering a piece of land to the parish council. Then local people set about fund raising and eventually after months of hard work £38,000 was raised.

Ken Knight of Brookland Parish Council said: “The parish council started the process, but we could not have delivered the project without the support of local people, The Crown Estate and numerous other bodies… and the early feedback is that activity Hub is proving a real success. Not only are young people from Brookland using it, but so are youngsters from neighbouring villages.”

Michael Woolridge of The Crown Estate said: “The Crown Estate is keen to assist, where possible, local communities and were delighted to be able to let the area of land to the community.

"We very much hope that the youth area will be well supported and that it will provide a benefit to the local community.”

The Hub will be officially opened on Saturday 18 April at 4 pm.
