LANDMARK PICCADILLY SCHEME GETS THE GO-AHEAD

The Crown Estate received a welcome boost to its imaginative plans for the regeneration of the eastern end of Piccadilly yesterday evening with Westminster City Council endorsing its proposals for a 150,000 sq ft mixed use redevelopment scheme known as St. James’s Gateway. The proposals form the first part of The Crown Estate’s recently announced investment programme to raise standards across its significant St. James’s portfolio.

The scheme will deliver comprehensive public realm improvements together with a striking new Eric Parry designed frontage along Piccadilly, significantly enhancing the famous views of the street from Piccadilly Circus. The distinctive retail character of Jermyn Street will also be preserved, with long-established Jermyn Street retailers such as Trumpers and Herbie Frogg returning to the development once it is completed.

Commenting on the decision, The Crown Estate’s Head of Development, Jim Yates, said: “The Crown Estate welcomes the committee’s decision this evening. The outcome represents a culmination of over two years’ work including a comprehensive programme of consultation with local residents, businesses and amenity groups. A considerable amount of research and preparation went into the design of St. James’s Gateway, and we are delighted that the committee has endorsed our scheme.”

Jim Yates continued: “As with all of The Crown Estate’s work across the UK, our approach to regeneration at Piccadilly and St. James’s is at all times guided by our core values of commercialism, integrity and stewardship.”

The scheme was designed by Eric Parry Architects with CB Richards Ellis acting as planning consultants.
