SURREY SCULPTURE SOCIETY EXHIBITION RETURNS TO THE SAVILL GARDEN

22 April 2008

The Surrey Sculpture Society will be showing nearly 100 pieces of original sculpture at The Royal Landscape’s Savill Garden and Savill Building, Windsor Great Park, from 31 May to 6 July, following the tremendous success of the exhibition last year. There will also be a weekend of artist demonstrations in the garden during 7 – 8 June.

Head of The Savill Garden, Harvey Stephens, says: “The Savill Garden provides a fantastic backdrop for the sculptures. Not only does it have a number of garden ‘compartments’ providing different atmospheres and levels of light, but also we have spectacular flowers, majestic trees, grassy vistas, undulating paths and ponds.”

“Visitors were thrilled and excited to come upon the sculptures in the garden last year. Working with The Surrey Sculpture Society, the challenge for me is to identify an appropriate setting for each piece of art. The sculptures are numbered and visitors can follow a map around the garden to ensure that they see everything.”

Sculptor Sue Nicholson adds: “The Savill Garden provides the perfect setting for a varied collection of sculptures in a wide range of sizes and media. The exhibition has been carefully designed to appeal both to lovers of contemporary work as well as those who prefer more traditional subjects and styles. Materials used will include bronze, metal and ceramics, and every piece, which is either unique or a limited edition, is for sale.”

Visitors to the garden will see sixty outdoor sculptures, including Velo-ciraptor, Lizard, Ostrich, Otter Pair, Nile Goddess, Flamenco Dancer and Pond Man. In the award-winning Savill Building, people will be able to view over thirty indoor sculptures such as Cut Apple, Doc Marten Boot and Spanish Conquistador.

As part of the exhibition, over the weekend of 7 – 8 June a number of artists will show how they create their impressive sculptures in the garden, demonstrating their specialist skills and techniques from casting to welding. Visitors will also be able to meet the sculptors and talk about all aspects of their work.

The Savill Garden is part of The Royal Landscape, which also includes the Valley Gardens and Virginia Water. It is England’s finest woodland and ornamental garden with over thirty-five acres of trees, shrubbery, ponds and streams, lawns, meadows and formal beds which are home to some of the world’s most decorative plants. Throughout the period of the Surrey Sculpture Trail, visitors will enjoy the Summer Gardens, with resplendent rose beds, deep herbaceous borders, the contemporary cottage Golden Jubilee Garden and the drought-tolerant Dry Garden.
