SWALLOW AND VINE STREET IMPROVEMENTS COMMENDED BY LONDON MAYOR BORIS JOHNSON

3 March 2009

Improvements to Swallow Street and Vine Street have been commended by Boris Johnson in the London Planning Awards’ ‘Best New Public Space’ category.

Commenting on the commendation which was presented by the Mayor, David Shaw, Head of Regent Street Strategy and Development at The Crown Estate said: “We are thrilled that our work to enhance and reinvigorate the public spaces surrounding Regent Street has been recognised in these prestigious awards. These improvements form part of Regent Street’s £750 million regeneration programme that is delivering an international place for business, a place for shopping but most importantly, a place for people.”

Sir Simon Milton, Deputy Mayor said: “(This is) the reclamation of a small street between Regent Street and Piccadilly.  The innovative creation of an off-street servicing area for deliveries and waste management has enabled the street to be reclaimed as a valuable piece of public realm including outside dining spaces.”

He continued: “The judges were impressed by the re-arrangement of building servicing to create an oasis of quiet in the heart of the West End as this offers an example to many other buildings both existing and planned.”

Councillor Danny Chalkley, Westminster City Council's cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "Regent Street is without doubt one of the country’s premier retail destinations and visitors to Swallow Street, one of the top places to eat in London, can enjoy relaxing in this urban oasis. It is a credit to all those involved that the Mayor has recognised the importance of this public space. We are confident that by creating more places where people can unwind and take advantage of the West End’s unrivalled offer of dining and entertainment, the area will continue to thrive.”

The Crown Estate’s £750 million Regent Street vision investment programme was also shortlisted for the London Planning Awards ‘Best Conceptual Scheme’.

Sir Simon Milton said: “The Regent Street vision, submitted by The Crown Estate, seeks to restore Regent Street back to its status as the UK’s premier retailing location is clearly important for both the West End and London.  Its implementation is already supported by ten successful planning permissions and no doubt more will be on the way.”
