REGENT STREET – A TASTE OF SPAIN 2009

Huge crowds flooded Regent Street today, Sunday 31 May 2009, for the fabulous street festival Regent Street - A Taste of Spain 2009.

This Spanish fiesta showcased the very best of Spain with live performances including flamenco, ballet, folk music and DJ performances from the main stage situated at the junction of Regent Street and New Burlington Street.

Thousands shopped until they dropped in the summer sun, with many of the stores offering in store activities and a 20% discount and most restaurants offering special offers and menus to celebrate the occasion. Regent Street's food quarters, Heddon Street and Swallow Street also offered al fresco dining.

Regent Street was packed with entertainment from twelve of the Spanish regions offering various activities for everybody’s pleasure:

Balearic Islands

  • hugely popular dancing horses
  • lively fiesta from Paco Fernández y la Gente del Sol.

Madrid

  • “Paseo del Arte” – an art walk / exhibition showcasing the Reina Sofía, Museo del Prado and Thyssen museums.

Andalucía

  • full programme of flamenco performances
  • fashion catwalk shows throughout the day.

Valencia

  • two giant paellas in Regent Street.

Aragón

  • jota dance from Ballet Aragonés Baluarte
  • the Orquestina del Fabirol with live traditional music.

Green Spain – Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Basque Country

  • different arts and crafts
  • a unique display of hand carved wooden instruments
  • fishing net and sailor knot demonstrations
  • the Royal Band of Bagpipers from Galicia
  • Danzaina – traditional music
  • Kukai – contemporary Basque dancing
  • anchovy tasting for food lovers.

Navarra

  • a medieval food market with artisans dressed for the occasion
  • typical cuisine from Navarra
  • selling cheese, peppers and chorizo.

The Canary Islands

  • children’ s entertainment with face painting, balloon figurines, caricatures, magic, mini golf and mascots representing the islands.

Extremadura

  • authentic local food.
