GREEN LIGHT FOR TEESSIDE OFFSHORE WINDFARM

17 September 2007

The Crown Estate has today welcomed the announcement that consent has been granted by the Department of Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (DBERR), for the offshore windfarm project at Redcar in Teesside.

The planned windfarm will be developed and run by EDF Energy and will consist of up to 30 turbines – capable of producing up to 90MW of electricity – enough electricity to supply the annual requirements of around 60,000 households.

As owners of the seabed out to 12 nautical miles, The Crown Estate leases areas of seabed for offshore windfarm development in support of the Government’s target of 10% renewable energy production by 2010.

Rob Hastings, Director of Marine Estates at The Crown Estate, said: “We are delighted that DBERR have granted Teesside, a round one windfarm project, consents to proceed. We are encouraged by EDF’s determination to build this windfarm and we look forward to another 90MW of offshore wind generation capacity coming online. The UK already has almost 400MW of offshore wind power in operation with a further 450MW under construction. The approval of Teesside brings the total of consented projects awaiting construction over to over 2000MW, making the UK the world leader in offshore wind energy.”

EDF Energy Chief Executive Vincent de Rivaz said: “We’re very pleased with DBERR’s decision which marks an important milestone for the project. We have been consulting on our plans extensively with local groups for over 4 years and we would like to thank all those who took part for their valued input.

“EDF Energy has a long-term commitment to maintaining a diverse and sustainable energy mix in the future, involving all types of generation including renewables. We believe this diversity is crucial to address climate change, for security of supply and to provide competitively priced electricity for all our customers.
