CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS WITH THE ROYAL LANDSCAPE

23 November 2007

For the first time ever, visitors will be able to enjoy The Savill Garden free of charge throughout December. It will be an opportunity to experience the tranquil and understated beauty of the garden in winter, together with wonderful surprises including the flowers of mahonias and witch hazels, the vibrant red, yellow and orange stems of dogwoods and the winter berries of the hollies. Conifers are conspicuous in the landscape and contrast with the oaks and beech trees. The recently opened New Zealand Garden has a great deal to offer in winter, including a host of evergreen plants and the textural delights of masses of striking tussock grasses.

Father Christmas will be visiting The Savill Garden over the first three weekends in December – Saturday 1 & Sunday 2, Friday 7 & Saturday 8 plus Friday 14 & Saturday 15. Father Christmas will be ready in his grotto to hear about what the children would like for Christmas and then each child will receive an early Christmas gift. The price is £4.50 per child.

The Savill Building shop will have a wide ranging selection of interesting gifts for all of the family. It provides an easy parking one-stop-shop for Christmas with high quality presents, stocking fillers for adults and children for under £5, classic Christmas decorations following woodland and frosty themes, together with table linen, Christmas trees, Christmas cards and wrapping paper. There are delicious Christmas food ranges including relishes, pickles and chutneys from the Bay Tree food company and warming winter wines and liquors from the Lurgashall Winery.

Throughout December until Christmas, free of charge, children will be able to make their own Christmas cards, and write and post a letter to Father Christmas in the Christmas arts activity area in The Savill Building. Glitter pens, crayons, paper, stencils and envelopes will be provided.

Shopping

There will be three special Christmas shopping evenings on 28 November, 5 and 12 December when the shop will be open until 9pm, with mulled wine and chestnuts, festive music and a Christmas menu in the restaurant. A barbershop choir will perform live on 28 November, followed by the Royal School on 5 December; plus the harpist Rebecca Jones will be playing on 12 December. All performances will be from 5.30-7pm.

Stephanie Woods, a professional florist who has supplied and arranged the floral arrangements for Windsor Castle and Cumberland Lodge, will be demonstrating flower arranging for Christmas in The Garden Room in The Savill Building on 6 and 13 December at 1.30pm. The sessions are free of charge with a maximum of 50 places for each date. Those wishing to attend should pre-book at The Savill Building reception. Craft materials used during the workshop can be purchased afterwards from the shop.

The Rural Craft Association will be bringing crafts for Christmas, with fantastic quality gifts from British crafts people, to The Savill Building from 30 November to 2 December. The fair will be open Friday and Saturday 9am – 5pm and Sunday 9am – 4pm. Each ticket purchased permits entry on two days. Tickets can be bought in advance (adults £5.50, seniors £4.50, subject to a 50p transaction fee) by calling the ticket hotline on 01428 684 494. At the event, adults are £6.50, seniors £5.50, students £3 and children are free.

Environmentally friendly, high quality Christmas trees from the Windsor estate will be on sale from The Savill Building car park from 1 to 23 December, from 8.30am – 5pm Monday to Friday, and from 9am – 5pm Saturday and Sunday. The Windsor estate Christmas trees have Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) accreditation, meaning they have been grown in an environmentally sustainable way, using no herbicides or insecticides. They range from 3 ft to over 25 ft and the four varieties grown are the Norway Spruce, the Nordmann Fir, the Fraser Fir and the Scots Pine. Every year, the estate supplies Christmas trees to Windsor Castle, the Royal Palaces and St Paul’s Cathedral.
