MORAY FIRTH FLOTILLA ATTRACTS FURTHER SPONSORSHIP

28 March 2007

The Crown Estate are the latest funders to come aboard the Moray Firth Flotilla, with £10,000 sponsorship.

The organisers hope to attract up to 40 boats for the June event ,and already have 24 confirmed entries from all over the UK and Scandinavia.

Alex Adrian, Deputy Head of the Scottish Marine Estate, said: “We are delighted to support this initiative which will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the Highland Year of Culture.

“We are thoroughly impressed by the passion and commitment Flotilla Co-ordinator Sinclair Young and his colleagues have demonstrated in organising such an exciting and, I’m sure, memorable undertaking.

“The Moray Firth Flotilla belongs to the people in the communities around the Moray Firth and amazing enthusiasm for the event has already been shown.”

Sinclair Young added: “This is a tremendous boost to our funds and we are delighted to have this support from The Crown Estate.

“It allows us to ensure that the spectacle of the Moray Firth Flotilla will demonstrate the wealth of history and help to educate the young people about their heritage.”

The fleet of traditional boats, each with its own unique history, will leave Wick on 23 June, sailing south past cliffy Caithness and the sandy beaches of Moray to historic Portsoy.

It will arrive at Portsoy in time for the three-day Scottish Traditional Boat Festival, which begins on Friday 29 June.

Events will be held at each port of call for the Flotilla – Wick, Lybster, Helmsdale, Invergordon, Cromarty, Buckie and Portsoy.
