REGENT STREET FESTIVAL 2007: AN INDIAN SUMMER

3 September 2007

An estimated 600,000 people visited the Regent Street Festival 2007 on Sunday 2 September 2007, for one of the most exciting outdoor free street events in London, showcasing all the flair, colour and magic of India.

Closed to traffic, Regent Street was filled with dance processions, theatre and musical displays, transporting audiences to a country famed for its exotic festivals.

Shoppers enjoyed discounts and special in-store activities at Regent Street shops including Bollywood dancers in the window of Hobbs, fashion millinery instillation by Shilpa Chaven at Desigual, henna design, along with Indian cuisine and music at Hawes & Curtis, Indian head massage at Austin Reed and body painting at Frey Wille.

Indian street food was cooked and served by Masala Zone – an estimated 20,000 tomatoes, 60,000 onions, 100 kilos of chilli, 100 kilos of spices, 1,000 kilos of cooked rice and 300,000 litres of water were consumed. Masala Zone is the sister restaurant of Veeraswamy on Regent Street and is famously the oldest Indian restaurant in the UK.

Regent Street continues to flourish with the £500 million remodelling and revitalisation programme by The Crown Estate, creating a quality environment for Londoners and tourists alike.

The Regent Street Festival 2007: An Indian Summer was organised by the Regent Street Association and supported by The Crown Estate and its partners Incredible India!, the Mayor of London, Visit London, Westminster City Council and the New West End Company. The Regent Street Festival is the climax of the Mayor of London’s three-month India Now season, which has seen over 200 cultural organisations and attractions participate across London.
