Press Release
THE REGENT STREET CHRISTMAS LIGHTS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH NOKIA
21 November 2007
The spectacular Regent Street Christmas lights were switched on by shoppers on Regent Street last night.
To celebrate the imminent arrival of the Nokia flagship store at 240 Regent Street, this year’s Christmas lights are being sponsored by Nokia. The unique illuminations, titled UNITY, are designed to connect shoppers at the start of this year’s festive season.
Designed to be interactive, the Regent Street Christmas lights respond to the movement of people and the environment in the street. Last night, led by stiltwalkers and drummers, two processions of visitors and shoppers walked from each end of Regent Street to turn the lights on. After the count down the fourteen 3D light clusters lit up, choreographed to music composed specially for the event.
Using motion cameras, the displays will shift and change in response to the density of pedestrians in the street, and environmental factors including weather, wind speed and sunlight levels. They are 100% recyclable and the LEDs use a fifth of the energy required by traditional light bulbs, thereby reducing the energy consumption over the seven-week period from 4,657 kilowatt hours (KwH ) to approximately 465 KwH – a saving of about 4,190 KwH.
The Crown Estate is investing £500 million in Regent Street to create an exciting and contemporary shopping environment. This year’s lights, sponsored by Nokia, echo the modernity and variety of Regent Street, whilst also enhancing its hallmarks: quality, heritage, style and success.
The Regent Street Christmas lights complement the new shops that have recently opened including Desigual, Hoss Intropia and COS. These contemporary brands join long-established Regent Street names such as Aquascutum, Jaeger, Liberty, Mappin and Webb, Hamleys and Austin Reed.
UNITY will be illuminated from 20 November until 6 January 2008.
