The Green Blue
We are delighted to support The Green Blue. Since its creation in 2005, the programme continues to align with our commitment to improving the status and management of our coastal estate.
The Green Blue is a national programme created by the Royal Yachting Association and British Marine to support the UK recreational boating sector in reducing its impact on the environment, helping keep our coasts and inland waters in great shape for now and the future.
It’s clear that the boating sector has really taken to environmental change.”Jane Swan, Project Manager at The Green Blue
The Green Blue team works with boaters, yachting and boat clubs and marine businesses to raise environmental awareness, encourage sustainable choices, provide guidance on energy efficiency, recycling and water use, and identify eco-friendly products to make boating in the UK as sustainable as possible.
There are around 1,500 sailing and yacht clubs in the UK and a similar number of marine businesses. Since its launch in 2005, The Green Blue has helped hundreds of clubs and marinas across the UK, the vast majority of which occupy our land, to minimise their impact on the environment and save money.
Jane Swan, Project Manager at The Green Blue, said "If you take a look around most sailing clubs and marinas today, it’s clear that the boating sector has really taken to environmental change."
In 2015, The Green Blue celebrated a decade of workshops, environmental audits, resources and support to make sustainable boating simple.
Examples of initiatives implemented by the UK recreational boating sector include LED lighting along pontoons, smart meters, waste management facilities with different receptacles for every type of boat waste, solar panels on marina office roofs and yacht decks, on-board wind turbines, hybrid engines, inline bilge filters and electric car charging points in marina car parks.
In addition, The Green Blue helped Land Rover Ben Ainslie Racing achieve ISO 20121 certification for sustainability across all its operations in 2015. Sunsail and the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy also secured ISO 20121 for the third year running, supported by The Green Blue.
