New JNAPC Code of Practice for Seabed Development

This new code is an essential reference point for all sectors looking to undertake development of the seabed around the UK as it encourages a responsible approach to preserving our cultural marine resources.

The Joint Nautical Archaeology Policy Committee (JNAPC) is made up of individuals, representatives of government bodies and other institutions with an interest and expertise in the marine historic environment. They work to raise awareness of our underwater heritage as well as developing proposals for legislative reform.

In 1995 the JNAPC published a Code of Practice for Seabed Development with the main aim of defining best practice in terms of co-operation and discussion between archaeologists and seabed developers. The code was revised in 1998. Since then significant changes have taken place in the use, legislation and knowledge of the marine environment. With the emergence of offshore renewables as an industry sector and an increased awareness of the need to manage and protect our marine historic environment, it was thought timely and topical to produce a revised version. We are facilitating this revision and publication through marine stewardship.

The new code looks to build on the principles set out in the original and offers guidance to developers on issues such as risk management and legislative implications. It also provides a comprehensive list of expert contacts for further advice. The code also highlights the responsibility of developers in protecting the UK’s marine heritage and identifies the potential benefits to companies which follow best practice.
