The Crown Estate's commercial activities of marine aggregate extraction, aquaculture and offshore renewable energy are underpinned by relevant scientific research.
Since 1999 we have invested nearly £3.5 million in projects aimed at understanding and mitigating the impacts of aggregate dredging, aquaculture and other marine activities. This research underpins our commercial activities and helps us to develop a responsible approach to managing our resources. Further, by targeting new research and the identification and implementation of practical solutions to priority issues, we contribute to the long term and sustainable development of these industries.
Aggregate-Based Studies
Aggregate-based studies have ranged from investigations into how aggregate dredging affects sediment movement, to looking at impacts on benthic communities, submerged landscapes and archaeology. More recently we have supported data management and seabed habitat mapping projects.
Aquaculture Studies
Aquaculture studies have ranged from environmental issues with implications for all stakeholders, to optimising site selection, the potential for new sources of aquafeed and improving fish health and welfare. The Crown Estate has been a major funder of the Scottish Aquaculture Research Forum (SARF), whose aim is to promote, encourage and support research and development in aquaculture.
Offshore Renewable Energy Studies
We have also invested in research related to offshore renewable energy. Please follow the link for more information.
