Wave and Tidal Projects
As owner of the UK seabed out to the 12 nautical mile territorial sea limit and with rights under the Energy Act 2004 to licence the generation of renewable energy in the Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) on the UK’s continental shelf to 200 nautical miles, The Crown Estate plays an important part in the development of the UK’s renewable energy industry.
We are committed to working with industry, government and other stakeholders to realise the UK’s renewable energy targets and as part of this, successfully exploit the country’s significant wave and tidal energy resources.
To date, we have been involved in the establishment of test site facilities for wave and tidal energy devices in Orkney (the European Marine Energy Centre) and Cornwall (Wave Hub). We have also held the first round of a leasing competition for demonstration and commercial project sites in the Pentland Firth and Orkney waters, resulting in 1,200 MW of planned projects. We will be inviting expressions of interest in a further project in the Pentland Firth, specifically in the Inner Sound.
Looking ahead, we are planning further wave and tidal leasing rounds for both demonstration and commercial projects, including a round in Scottish waters to give companies further opportunities to compete for the Saltire Prize. Also, developers planning demonstration projects may apply to us for demonstration leases.
