What happens if I don't pay my rent?
The Crown Estate recognises that there are many factors that can cause rent arrears including unemployment, domestic issues and housing benefit delays. Our policy is to work with you to come to a mutually acceptable agreement to repay the arrears. Legal action will only be taken as a last resort.
Where arrears continue to be a problem and where no regular pattern of reduction is being made, then The Crown Estate may issue you with a Notice of Seeking Possession or a Notice to Quit, depending upon your tenancy.
If necessary, The Crown Estate may apply to the County Court to seek a Possession Order against you – possibly leading to an eviction if the problem still persists. Where we reach that stage, then we will only withdraw upon receipt of full cash payment of the sum outstanding.
If you find yourself in rent arrears, then you should contact your local estate office immediately.
