The Crown Estate in Scotland
With a large rural estate and notable marine holdings in Scotland, The Crown Estate has a significant presence in Scotland. This is true not only of the commercial value of the estate, but in the relationships we have established at all levels of public and business life. We and our managing agents work with a range of organisations and individuals, public and private, and our activity in Scotland extends beyond the traditional workings of a landed estate.
For instance, we engage with organisations as diverse as the Scottish Government and the Green Tourism Business Scheme. We count fish farmers and conservation organisations amongst our tenants. In Edinburgh we let to high street retailers and an international bank. Our rural estates host nine Sites of Special Scientific Interest. We are the guardian of naturally occurring oysters and mussels in Scotland. We have working relationships with Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency. We hold the rights to salmon fishings, leasing them to both associations and private individuals. We directly manage almost 5,000 hectares of forestry.
Strengthening The Crown Estate Team
With Edinburgh hosting one of our principal offices for many years, our commitment to Scotland is well established. This commitment continues, and in recent years we have further strengthened our presence there by making three significant appointments to our dedicated Scotland team.
The new appointments were:
Alasdair Rankin, who joined us in November 2007 as Head of Marine Business Development for Scotland, leads our business development and investment activities.
We were also delighted to welcome Duncan Mackay as Wave and Tidal Development Manager. Duncan works on the Caithness Marine Renewable Energy Project, which aims to provide 1.3 GW of wave and tidal energy from the Pentland Firth by 2020.
New Assistant Offshore Manager Jack Steven came aboard in November 2007. Jack is involved in the management of offshore cables and pipelines and developments in aquaculture.
These appointees joined Alan Laidlaw, Head of New Business Development (Rural Estate) and Head of Edinburgh Office, and his team. Alan’s responsibilities include the management of all the rural assets in Scotland as well as heading the Edinburgh office. Alan has been with The Crown Estate since January 2005.

If you wish to make use of Crown Estate foreshore or seabed in Scotland then you need to provide us with enough information for us to assess your proposal. We have produced a series of simple application forms which should be completed and sent to us with as much supporting information as possible. You should refer to the guidance notes in each document before submitting your application or feel free to contact one of our local managing agents to discuss your proposals.
