The Great Park, part of a vast Norman hunting chase, is set in 2,020 hectares (5,000 acres) of the Surrey and Berkshire countryside stretching from Windsor Castle to the north and Ascot to the south. With its varied landscape and sweeping deer lawns, woods, coverts and huge solitary ancient oaks, the park abounds in wildlife. The pastoral landscape offers over two million visitors a year peaceful respite and the opportunity to witness a rich and unique heritage a thousand years in the making.

Public Access and Activities in the Great Park

It is the policy of The Crown Estate that the facilities of the Great Park should be available for as wide a cross section of recreational interests as can be accommodated without disturbing the character of the park. Please read on for further information about specific activities.

Horse Riding

The price of annual permits to ride in Windsor Great Park are detailed below. Please note that there are no day permits to ride in Windsor Great Park.

Cycling

Cyclists are very welcome in Windsor Great Park on most of the tarmac roads, but please note:

  • No cycling is permitted on the Long Walk.
  • No cycling is permitted in private areas, which are clearly designated by signs.
  • No cycling is permitted off road.
  • No cycling is permitted on the north side of Virginia Water (Valley Gardens area).

Cyclists are asked to give way to pedestrians and horses.

Roller Blading

Roller blading is permitted in the following areas:

  • From Bishops Gate - take first left and continue through Cumberland Gate, proceed across Smith's Lawn to the top of Breakheart Hill.
  • From Blacknest Gate - go straight on until reaching the bottom of Breakheart Hill.

Whatever pursuit you may be participating in, please remember that the Great Park is a wildlife and conservation area. Please do not disturb the wildlife or remove vegetation or fungi. Some areas of the park are private and set aside for wildlife conservation. Please observe signs and the park regulations for everyone's benefit.
