Press Release

NEW DEVELOPMENT WILL FEATURE LONDON VISITOR SHOWCASE

26 June 2007

Visit London has signed heads of terms for a ten-year letting agreement with The Crown Estate to establish the first ever Visit London ‘visitor showcase’ at the southern end of Regent Street, within The Crown Estate’s planned 93,000 sq. m (one million sq. feet) Quadrant development.

Regent Street is a prime destination for tourists worldwide and the letting (which is still to be documented) will provide Visit London with an ideal space within the Quadrant to operate a state-of-the-art drop-in centre for both Londoners and tourists from 2011.

The Quadrant forms part of The Crown Estate’s £500 million initiative to remodel, refurbish and revitalise Regent Street and proposes a comprehensive mixed use regeneration of the Café Royal, the Regent Palace Hotel and Quadrant Arcade blocks.

Totaling 400 sq. m (4,300 sq. feet) over the ground and first floors of the Regent Palace Hotel block, the visitor showcase will occupy a landmark corner position at the junction of Glasshouse Street and Sherwood Street, just off Piccadilly Circus.

This prime West End location could also provide a central location to showcase the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to visitors.

Visit London is planning to use digital technology to build a twenty-first century visitor centre that will:

  • help visitors to orientate themselves around the city
  • provide inspiration and information about what to do in London
  • allow visitors to download itineraries through the latest technologies.

James Bidwell, Visit London CEO, said: "Our new centre will further build on the success Visit London has had in increasing tourist numbers to London by nearly ten per cent last year and will be one of the most inspirational visitor centres in the world. We are delighted to be part of Regent Street's Quadrant development which will bring much needed regeneration to this important area.”

David Shaw, Head of Regent Street Strategy and Development at The Crown Estate said: “The Quadrant’s Visit London visitor showcase will be a unique celebration of the culture and activities on offer in the Capital and will become a ‘must visit’ for any tourist coming to London.”
