The proposed offshore windfarms are some of the largest infrastructure projects in the world. The level of market investment could potentially top £100 billion. Tens of thousands of jobs could be created – research by the British Wind Energy Association estimates that by 2020 the number of UK wind industry jobs will be in the region of 57,000, a ten-fold increase from 2008.
We recognise that for development on this scale to succeed, the supply chain must be efficient and robust. The supply chain includes all the elements that will contribute to offshore wind energy deployment including components, skilled workforce, infrastructure, and also the regulatory environment.
This is why from January to March 2010 we co-hosted a series of supply chain events. Held throughout the regions, they were organised in partnership with the UK government and the devolved governments in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
These events acted as ‘marketplaces’ to enable all those involved in developing offshore wind sites to do business together. No single region can deliver the requirements to support the scale of development alone; and these events created the opportunity for local and regional companies to do business right across the UK.
There is a huge opportunity for the regions and businesses of the UK to play a role in providing new jobs, inward investment and to ensure that we remain the world leader in offshore wind deployment.
DECC have a dedicated website for their UK Renewables Service, which supports individual companies who are entering or expanding in the renewables industry by providing information, advice and contacts. For further information please follow the link:
