Marine Business Awards
The winner of the marine business award 2009 is Dean & Reddyhoff Marinas for their Portland Marina
Dean & Reddyhoff Marinas’ new 560-berth marina at Portland in Dorset opened for business in April 2009. The marina, which will form part of the venue for hosting the sailing events for the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games, has contributed to the regeneration of a former Royal Naval site disused since the late 1990s.
New facilities including a waterside bar and restaurant, and public walkway have transformed the appearance of the site. With twenty new business units plus an anticipated 600 boat owners requiring marine services and supplies, the new marina is expected to generate over 150 jobs for local people bringing huge economic benefits to Weymouth and Portland and helping create a longer term legacy for Portland.
Portland Marina has been designed to be as energy efficient as possible. At least 10% of the marina’s energy will be generated from renewable sources and three wind turbines are directly linked to the marina’s power supply. The marina buildings also have very high standards of insulation and the marina itself is illuminated by low-energy LED lighting whilst the installation of bicycle racks are aimed at encouraging sustainable travel to the site as Portland Marina is linked to Weymouth town centre by a flat cycle path.
Dean & Reddyhoff are also at the forefront of providing recycling facilities at Portland Marina. Working in partnership with The Green Blue – the Royal Yachting Association and British Marine Federation’s environmental awareness initiative – they have implemented recycling facilities for berth holders to collect all recyclable materials whilst on board together in a single container and then deposit this in any of the recycling bins around the marina.
While developing Portland Marina, Dean & Reddyhoff have been actively involved in the local marine and business community. Their charitable contributions include the donation of a Laser sailing dinghy to the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy plus £5,000 towards a new safety boat. In preparation for the Olympics, the company has also become an official supplier to Skandia Team GBR, which will be operating from one of the marina’s commercial units.
The judges – Rob Hastings, Director of The Crown Estate’s Marine Estate and Dinah Nichols, non-executive Board member of The Crown Estate – commented: “This development will help to transform the economy of Portland for the benefit of the entire local community and we were particularly impressed with the approach taken by Dean & Reddyhoff to develop, maintain and promote the highest environmental standards within the marina.”
Richard Reddyhoff, Director of Dean & Reddyhoff Marinas, said: “We are delighted to receive this award from The Crown Estate. The development of Portland Marina is our biggest ever project and we have put in a huge amount of work and investment over the last three years making sure we get it right. It is fantastic to see this recognised by such a prestigious organisation as The Crown Estate and we hope it will help to put Portland on the map as one of the UK’s top yachting destinations.”
