Scottish wildcat - our Glenlivet estate is rich in biodiversity
The Environment Around Us
We believe that our stewardship role on our estates should leave a legacy for future generations and be an example to others. To this end and in recognition of the threat posed by climate change, we aim to operate as a lean and enterprising organisation that uses resources efficiently; minimises emissions to land, air and water; curbs the production of waste and increases its recycling; and conserves and enhances those parts of the estate rich in biodiversity and architectural and historical value.
1) CLIMATE CHANGE
High Level Commitment:
We strive to achieve a zero carbon footprint. We will reduce our own carbon emissions, encourage our customers to do similarly and promote sequestration through forestry and carbon capture.
Statement of Belief:
We believe that climate change presents both physical and regulatory risks to our business, and to society as a whole, in the medium and longer term.
2) RESOURCE EFFICIENCY
High Level Commitment:
We will use resources efficiently. We will reduce our energy and water use, limit waste production, increase the reuse and recycling of our own waste and encourage our customers to do likewise.
Statement of Belief:
We believe that the prudent use of resources maximises business efficiency, as well as sustaining environmental capital for future generations.
Having pursued our sustainability agenda for some five years, in 2008 we reviewed our approach to ensure that sustainability was truly embedded in within our organisational structure and business strategy. This has resulted in the restructuring of our sustainability governance and a re-evaluation of our long-term sustainability aims. As preparatory work on this is still ongoing we will launch the new strategy, together with long-term targets, in the autumn of 2009.
In the meantime we are committed to improving our sustainability performance and will be extending the scope of our baseline data collection to help the development of meaningful, long-term targets. We are also pursuing a number of shorter term targets and other actions to ensure the continuing improvement of our performance.
Please see the 2009 annual report for details of achievement against our 2008/09 targets and our targets for 2009/10.
