CR Report 2004

Corporate Social Responsibility

We make a profit - and we also accept responsibility. Whether it is valuing our staff who get results in a difficult economic climate, achieving the best balance of quality versus value to meet stakeholder expectations, acting as a good neighbour and working with communities to provide affordable housing or simply by working with suppliers and business partners to the same goals – we aim to behave with integrity.

In 2004 The Crown Estate produced its first Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report, setting out our philosophy, our principles and our aims. It embraces our corporate values of commercialism, integrity and stewardship which underpin our ongoing commitment to being a good corporate citizen, and recognises the unique responsibility we have to balance business concerns with the good management of many of the nation’s most historic buildings and environmentally significant countryside.

Produced using an environmentally aware and ‘carbon neutral’ printing process, this is the first edition of what will become an annual publication. It illustrates the extensive work we do with our customers, stakeholders, community groups and own staff, it demonstrates the work we are doing: to improve our environmental stewardship; reducing waste and harmful emissions; the way we communicate and work with local communities affected by our activities; the ways in which our employees are trained and the benefits they receive; the preservation of our important built heritage; providing awards and sponsorship support; and the innovative ways in which we manage our assets.

As this is a very large document, we have also broken it up into chapters, which can be accessed using the links below.

The report complements our ethical responsibilities, operational performance and our philosophy towards dealing fairly and openly with our customers, colleagues, the community at large and the environment around us.

For many years, we have encouraged and practised good corporate citizenship through a clear sense of social responsibility and environmental awareness, taking a longer term view in the management of the estate. We see our CSR report building on these core strengths and allowing us to identify new opportunities to improve and measure our performance in the years to come.
