The Windsor Estate covers approximately 6,700 hectares (16,500 acres), including over 2,800 hectares (7,000 acres) of forest, Windsor Great Park and Home Park, The Savill and Valley Gardens, residential properties and commercial properties including Berkshire and Swinley Forest Golf Courses, Ascot Racecourse, Smith's Lawn and five let farms.
Windsor Great Park is the only Royal Park managed by The Crown Estate, which has a duty to maintain its character as a Royal park and forest. Considerable resources are needed to manage the estate. The 2006/07 deficit was £2.6 million.
The Park welcomes over 2 million visitors every year who enjoy a wide variety of recreational activities such as horse riding, walking, fishing and cycling. The majority of the park has Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) status and has to be managed to a high environmental standard.
