Delivering a cleaner Westminster
In support of the Climate Emergency Action Plan published by Westminster City Council (WCC), we have played a pivotal role in setting up the Zero Emissions Group alongside 10 other Westminster landowners who are ready to push the boundaries on reducing emissions.
We co-chair the Group with Westminster City Council’s Director of Environment, discussing issues, solutions and hearing and sharing best practice.
Seeing the potential for a much broader impact across Westminster, the Zero Emissions Group and Westminster City Council subsequently linked up with the Westminster Property Association (WPA), resulting in a joint pledge to work together to create a Sustainable City Charter to be launched in 2022. The charter will be a scalable toolkit which sets out the activities organisations can undertake to reduce their operational environmental impact to deliver an improved, greener and healthier built environment, aligning to Westminster’s net zero carbon by 2040 targets.
Partnering with Volta Trucks and Clipper Logistics, we are piloting a new fully electric HGV from summer 2022 for our retail freight consolidation scheme. It will decarbonise and consolidate deliveries for our customers, helping to improve air quality and congestion in the West End. This is one example of the sort of project expected to be advocated in the Sustainable City Charter.
Since 2008, Clipper Logistics has been working with us to operate the delivery scheme, which has been consolidating multiple individual goods delivery trips into fewer combined journeys. The initiative was the first of its kind in London.
The purpose-built Volta Zero has been designed to be as safe as possible with a glasshouse-style cab that maximises driver visibility and provides industry-leading safety and driver working environment standards, while its large 8.6-tonne payload removes several smaller 3.5-tonne vans from the streets.
