Building a community of entrepreneurs

This year we launched our first flexible and co-working space at One Heddon Street.

This Grade II-listed building, which has been a stable, art gallery, cinema and theatre, has been transformed into a 350-desk flexible workspace for modern, entrepreneurial businesses whose occupancy might last from one day to several years.

With a range of individual, co-working and private office spaces, One Heddon Street offers professionals, entrepreneurs and start-ups the perfect environment to operate from in the heart of central London.

The innovative refurbishment reflects our commitment to creating places which support good health, wellbeing and productivity. The focus has been on creating an ergonomic environment with comfortable desks, access to natural light, clean air and water – as well as fitness, comfort and mental wellbeing. One Heddon Street will be the world’s first co-working space to achieve WELL certification from the International Well Building Institute.

As part of our ambition to get closer to our customers, we are managing the space ourselves through our in-house customer service team led by Mel Reeves so that we can tailor our offer more closely to the needs of our customers. The full Crown Estate experience includes a host of amenities that small businesses may not normally be able to access – from a great physical environment and a wellbeing and events programme to networking and professional events.

In-house café Ziggy Green, the eighth café in the Daisy Green Collection, is a great service for customers as well as providing a haven for shoppers in Regent Street.

All in all it makes life easy for young businesses, allowing them to develop and grow. Fast Thinking, one of our first customers, has already upgraded its office space as its business takes off.

Nick Ellsom is the founder of Fast thinking, a digital agency that helps brands accelerate their digital marketing through services that unify and personalise digital assets and communications across ads, emails and websites.

Australian-born Prue Freeman is the founder of award-winning restaurant group the Daisy Green Collection, an independent business in central London, renowned for creating one-off local destinations which bring together laid-back Antipodean food culture, art and design.

"We were drawn to the history and charm of One Heddon Street - the Grade II listed cinema building and its association with David Bowie’s iconic Ziggy Stardust album. It has been very exciting to work with The Crown Estate to create a new and exciting and forward thinking way of working, meeting and socialising. Ziggy Green is the result - an inspiring art filled inner city oasis for casual business meetings and the perfect pit stop for a busy day shopping on Regent’s Street."

Mel Reeves joined The Crown Estate in February 2018 as Workspace Operations Manager. She leads the team responsible for the operation and management of our new flexible office spaces, providing an exceptional customer and hospitality experience.

"I’ve learned if a building works for customers, they stay, so I am bringing my 20 years’ of hospitality experience in hotels, restaurants and offices to change the way The Crown Estate traditionally works. That means looking at everything from the customer’s point of view, and providing everything they expect – beautiful offices, flexibility, great support – with things they don’t, such as an exciting events programme, opportunities to network with other Crown Estate businesses, and a fantastic in-house café!"
