INVESTING IN GREEN ENERGY ON OUR FOCHABERS ESTATE

1 April 2008

The Crown Estate has installed a new ground source heat system in a cottage on its Fochabers estate as part of ongoing efforts to create the sustainable and affordable homes of the future.

The system, which is expected to deliver annual savings of up to £1,100, was installed as part of a major renovation of the property for which a 12 month tenancy is now available. The Crown Estate is to consider small-scale renewables in other properties in a bid to tackle climate change and fuel poverty, and stimulate demand in the fledgling renewables industry.

The ground source heat system – which works by transferring heat from underground into the building – does not require any external fuel and will meet all central heating and hot water needs. Case studies show annual cost savings for properties using the technology are up to 67% compared to oil systems.

Alan Laidlaw, Head of Customer Management of the Rural Estate at The Crown Estate, said: “The Crown Estate is keen to invest in small-scale renewables as they will not only reduce harmful carbon dioxide emissions, but will also result in lower household bills for residents. This development is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure our properties minimise resource use when possible and represent excellent value for money for tenants.

“Further, by helping stimulate demand for green energy technologies, we will be supporting an emerging industry that has huge potential and will help rural properties become more affordable. We are looking at other properties across the estate that could benefit from investment in economically viable renewable energy systems.”

The traditional two-bedroomed Auchenhalrig farm cottage has also been extended to form a spacious new kitchen and utility area, redecorated with new carpets fitted in all rooms, and has a large garden with car parking area.

Potential tenants can obtain further information and make an appointment to view the property by contacting Smiths Gore on 01343 823 000.
