Press Release

FIRST OLYMPIC SITE COMPLETED

28 November 2008

Today saw the completion of the first of the London 2012 Olympic sites as Portland Marina was officially opened by Ralph Luck, of the Olympic Delivery Authority, joined by gold medallist Paul Goodison.

Work began on the Portland Marina just over a year ago, when thousands of tonnes of rock were placed in the harbour as the start of work on the breakwater.

The Crown Estate has been closely involved in the project since its inception and has provided land in the harbour for the marina, sailing academy boating facilities and the reclamation part of the project.

A 200 m (656 ft) breakwater protects the new facilities with a new pier offering two yacht-lifting cranes and a pontoon providing 70 berths for race boats.

The world-class facility will play host to 400 athletes completing in 10 Olympic sailing categories.
