A GREENER NEW YEAR – RECYCLE YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE AT THE SAVILL GARDEN
21 December 2007
Begin the New Year by being environmentally friendly and recycling your Christmas tree at The Royal Landscape’s Savill Garden. From 6-12 January 2008 all Christmas trees can be unloaded into a special skip in the car park, after which they will be chipped and turned into mulch which is used throughout The Royal Landscape.
Assistant Keeper of the Gardens, Graham Sanderson, explains: “Here on the Windsor estate we recycle all of our green waste. We have a sophisticated process of recycling matter which produces 20,000 tonnes of mulch each year. Green waste comes from all over the estate, Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace. When it arrives in the recycling area, it is sorted into woody and weedy waste and then everything goes into the tub grinder. Wood chippings are mixed with horse dung shavings, grass and leaves. The matter is all mixed into a windrow and it is broken down by micro-organisms. This generates heat which triggers the windrow to turn the matter regularly. The process takes twelve weeks to complete and produces fantastic top mulch which we spread in the gardens and on the forest floor.”
The Savill Garden car park is open from 8am to 6pm and the Christmas tree recycling area is located to the right of the car park entrance. Christmas trees purchased from other outlets will be accepted.
Due to the mechanical processes involved in chipping, only Christmas trees can be accepted for recycling.
