SECRETARY OF STATE FOR ENERGY AND CLIMATE CHANGE, RT HON ED MILIBAND MP, TO ATTEND OFFSHORE WIND EVENT AS 2,000 UK BUSINESSES TAKE UP THE SUPPLY CHAIN CHALLENGE
26 February 2010
The Crown Estate is pleased to announce that nearly 2,000 UK businesses have attended the seven offshore wind industry supply chain events held across the country, with five events still to come. Today’s event in Doncaster has been oversubscribed, once again demonstrating the rapidly growing interest in the industry. It will be attended by the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Rt Hon Ed Miliband MP, who will speak about the opportunities and benefits that the offshore wind industry can bring to the UK.
The supply chain events, which started in Scotland in January and are taking place throughout the regions of the UK, provide a marketplace to help companies do business and become involved in offshore wind developments. The potential for the industry is huge, with The Crown Estate’s Round 3 leasing round aiming to deliver a quarter of the UK’s electricity needs by 2020. Offshore wind is a developing industry, which is creating some of the largest infrastructure projects in the world with a potential market investment of over £100 billion. With this comes the prospect of tens of thousands of jobs and a significant boost to the UK economy.
Roger Bright, Chief Executive of The Crown Estate said: “I am delighted that nearly 2,000 UK businesses have already grasped the challenge and opportunity that the offshore wind industry is offering. We want to capitalise on the UK’s position as the world leader in installed offshore wind capacity, and have invested in excess of £100 million in Round 3.”
These events, delivered regionally through a working partnership of The Crown Estate, regional development agencies, the UK Government and the devolved governments in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, aim to demonstrate the scale of the opportunity.
