BOARD MEMBERS VISIT APPLEGIRTH ESTATE

14 June 2007

Farming families and businesses on the Applegirth estate in Dumfriesshire met with board members of The Crown Estate during one of their regular visits this week.

Two members of the board, Ian Grant and Hugh Duberly, who are both farmers themselves, were joined by staff from The Crown Estate’s Edinburgh and London offices.

They visited twenty-four farms and other business interests on the estate, before hosting a dinner for tenant farmers at the Dryfedale Hotel in Lockerbie, where they were joined by Dumfriesshire MSP, Dr Elaine Murray.

Ian Grant, Scottish Commissioner and Chairman of The Crown Estate explained the importance of the visit. “As a farmer, I understand what makes rural business a success.  Our regular board visit programme ensures that we’re aware of the issues facing our tenants so that if need be, we can help to create the right environment for their farm businesses to continue to supply UK consumers.”

Alan Laidlaw, Head of Rural Customer Management for The Crown Estate added: “Nothing compares to being on a farm with our tenants. We work in partnership with estate residents and locals on to ensure that we respond to their needs and that they’re happy with the service provided. Applegirth is a very important asset in The Crown Estate’s portfolio and following some difficult times recently, the tenants are focusing on a strong future.”
