GLENLIVET ESTATE WELL PLACED AT THISTLE AWARDS

26 October 2007

The Crown Estate took second place in VisitScotland’s prestigious Scottish Thistle Award for 2007 in the Sustainable Tourism category for its work on the Glenlivet estate. This award was sponsored by Scottish Natural Heritage, and recognises excellence and leadership in sustainable tourism.

Businesses across Scotland were asked to show how their commitment to Scotland's environment and people guides their operations, growth and ambitions. The Crown Estate always seeks to operate on a commercial basis while working with local partners to deliver projects at the highest levels of environmental stewardship and integrity.

Andy Wells, Forestry and Countryside Manager for The Crown Estate, said: “We were thrilled to be short-listed in the Sustainable Tourism category, although obviously disappointed not to win. Nevertheless, to have come this close recognises the way The Crown Estate at Glenlivet has balanced the need for tourism and business and the need to protect and support this very special environment. It has taken hard work from so many people to deliver the estate’s wide range of access facilities and visitor services, as well as all the other community and public benefits we provide.”

At Glenlivet The Crown Estate has supported and undertaken an extensive range of tourism developments, as well as farm diversification, land management, community, cultural, natural heritage and business development projects. These developments rely on genuine local partnerships and collaborative working.

The development of open access and investment in recreational and tourism infrastructure, core path networks, all abilities facilities, interpretation and educational services put the Glenlivet estate well ahead of the new access legislation in Scotland. In particular, it has created significant tourism and business assets for the Cairngorms National Park and the local community.

In 2005 The Glenlivet estate became the first large landowner to achieve a Gold Award in the Green Tourism Business Scheme.
