SALMON FARMERS SCOOP TOP AWARDS

31 May 2007

The cream of one of Scotland’s flagship industries was recognised at The Crown Estate Scottish Salmon Farm Awards this evening.

The awards rewarded innovation and best practice in Scotland’s salmon farming industry - full list of winners.

Argyll-based Scottish Sea Farms took one of the top honours with the award of Salmon Farming Company of the Year (medium to large) while Wester Ross Fisheries picked up the award for small to medium companies.

Scottish Sea Farms made it a double with the award for Best Export Business.

Marine Harvest (Scotland) won Best Farm for its Wester Ross Loch Hourn site and scooped the prize for Best Community Initiative for its work with the Camanachd Association. They also picked up a cheque for £3,000 which will benefit a local marine-related community project. The firm added to their tally with the Best Contribution to Sustainability award for initiatives judged to have had a positive impact on the marine environment.

Shetland-based Johnsons Sustainable Seafoods were rewarded for innovation in breaking into new markets with the award for Best Added Value.

Alex Adrian, Deputy Head of The Crown Estate’s Scottish Marine Estate, said: “The Crown Estate is delighted to be able to help celebrate the success of a Scottish industry which leads the way for best practice and innovation. The high standard of entries made judging extremely difficult.

“Much of the best practice and innovation in the salmon farming industry is taking place here in Scotland and entrants demonstrated that the fish they produce is a world-class product, farmed with a high level of environmental awareness.”

The judges were Peter Dryburgh, Director of NAFC Marine Centre; Dennis Overton, Managing Director of Aquascot; Christina Reid, Aquaculture Editor of Fish Update and Fish Farmer; Professor Phil Thomas, Chairman of the Scottish Aquaculture Code of Good Practice Management Committee; and Dr Carolyn Heeps (Chair), Head of Offshore and Environment at The Crown Estate.
