WAVE HUB PROJECT APPROVAL

17 September 2007

The Crown Estate today welcomed the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform’s decision to approve Wave Hub’s application to develop an underwater facility off the north Cornish coastline.

The Crown Estate clearly recognises and supports the important contribution marine renewable technologies will make over time to the UK’s overall energy mix. Wave Hub’s plans to provide wave developers with a fixed link directly from the seabed to the national grid for arrays of pilot wave energy devices is an important step in the early development of this new technology.

Commenting on the planned development Ian Pritchard, Head of Offshore Development at The Crown Estate, said: “Wave Hub is to be congratulated for progressing these ambitious plans through to a consent from government. Whilst there are further obstacles to be overcome before development can take place, particularly in relation to navigation, The Crown Estate is available to assist both Wave Hub and other interested parties in addressing these.”

A Crown Estate lease is required before the site can be developed. Grant of the lease will await a review of possible measures to mitigate the outstanding navigational concerns.
