  • 1760

    Crown Lands surrendered to Parliament

    George III surrenders Crown Lands to Parliament for an annual payment, with the estate’s profits going to the Treasury.

  • 1961

    Independent and commercial

    The Crown Estate Act establishes the modern-day company – managed by an independent board.

  • 1964

    Seabed ownership extended

    The Continental Shelf Act extends The Crown Estate’s ownership of the seabed to 12 nautical miles from Britain’s coast.

  • 2011

    Sovereign Grant

    Our profit, paid to the Treasury, is used by government to set the funding for the Monarch (The Sovereign Grant Act).
