Michael Plaut Appointed as Commissioner to The Crown Estate Board

Michael Plaut has been appointed to the Board of The Crown Estate with effect from July 2026.  

Michael is a Welsh business leader with extensive leadership experience in the financial, commercial and non-profit sectors as well as the public sector. He is a non-executive director and Member for Wales at the BBC, Chair of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama and a former Chair of the CBI in Wales. He is also Governor at the University of South Wales.  

He lives and works in Wales and has an OBE for his services to business and entrepreneurship.  

As well as the full responsibilities of a Commissioner of The Crown Estate Board, Michael will be responsible for providing advice about the conditions, priorities and opportunities in Wales, including about existing and emerging policies relevant to The Crown Estate’s activities.  

The appointment comes after the passing of the Crown Estate Act 2025, which granted The Crown Estate borrowing and new investment powers for the first time. It also increased the maximum number of commissioners on the Board from 8 to twelve in line with modern corporate governance standards.  

This included the provision to appoint a Commissioner who, alongside their wider responsibilities, can specifically support the Board’s ongoing understanding of Welsh interests and issues to make sure The Crown Estate’s strategy continues to take the conditions of Wales into consideration.  

The Act also includes provisions to appoint Commissioners to advise on matters relating to England and Northen Ireland.

Michael Plaut said: “It’s a real privilege to join The Crown Estate Board, and I’m excited by the opportunity ahead. I am particularly looking forward to bringing a strong understanding and insight of Wales into Board discussions, helping to make sure that Welsh interests, conditions and opportunities continue to be fully reflected as we take decisions for the long term.” 

The recruitment of Michael was made in accordance with the Code of Practice published by the Commissioner for Public Appointments. The positions are appointed by the His Majesty The King under Royal Warrant, following recommendation by the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Prime Minister.

Mae Michael Plaut wedi'i benodi i Fwrdd Ystad y Goron o fis Gorffennaf 2026 ymlaen. 

Mae Michael yn arweinydd busnes o Gymru sydd â phrofiad helaeth o arwain yn y sectorau ariannol, masnachol a di-elw yn ogystal â'r sector cyhoeddus. Mae'n gyfarwyddwr anweithredol ac yn Aelod dros Gymru yn y BBC, Cadeirydd Coleg Brenhinol Cerdd a Drama Cymru a chyn-Gadeirydd y CBI yng Nghymru. Mae hefyd yn Llywodraethwr ym Mhrifysgol De Cymru. 

Mae'n byw ac yn gweithio yng Nghymru ac mae ganddo OBE am ei wasanaethau i fusnes ac entrepreneuriaeth. 

Yn ogystal â chyfrifoldebau llawn Comisiynydd Bwrdd Ystad y Goron, bydd Michael yn gyfrifol am ddarparu cyngor ynghylch yr amodau, y blaenoriaethau a'r cyfleoedd yng Nghymru, gan gynnwys ynghylch polisïau presennol a rhai sy'n dod i'r amlwg sy'n berthnasol i weithgareddau Ystad y Goron. 

Daw'r penodiad ar ôl pasio Deddf Ystad y Goron 2025, a roddodd bwerau benthyca a buddsoddi newydd i Ystad y Goron am y tro cyntaf. Cynyddodd hefyd y nifer uchaf o gomisiynwyr ar y Bwrdd o 8 i ddeuddeg yn unol â safonau llywodraethu corfforaethol modern. 

Roedd hyn yn cynnwys y ddarpariaeth i benodi Comisiynydd a all, ochr yn ochr â'i gyfrifoldebau ehangach, gefnogi dealltwriaeth barhaus y Bwrdd o fuddiannau a materion Cymru yn benodol er mwyn sicrhau bod strategaeth Ystad y Goron yn parhau i ystyried amodau Cymru. 

Mae'r Ddeddf hefyd yn cynnwys darpariaethau i benodi Comisiynwyr i gynghori ar faterion sy'n ymwneud â Lloegr a Gogledd Iwerddon. 

Dywedodd Ric Lewis, Cadeirydd Ystad y Goron: “Mae’n wych croesawu Michael i Fwrdd Ystad y Goron. Bydd dyfnder profiad Michael mewn busnesau, gwasanaethau cyhoeddus a sefydliadau diwylliannol, ynghyd â’i gysylltiad dwfn â Chymru a’i ddealltwriaeth ohoni, yn ychwanegiad gwerthfawr i’r Bwrdd wrth i ni fwrw ymlaen â’n strategaeth yn y blynyddoedd i ddod. 

“Yn dilyn Deddf Ystad y Goron 2025, mae’r penodiad hwn yn cryfhau mewnwelediad cyfunol y Bwrdd ac yn sicrhau ein bod yn parhau i ystyried buddiannau ac amodau Cymru yn llawn wrth i ni fuddsoddi er mwyn gwerth hirdymor i’r genedl.” 

Dywedodd Michael Plaut: “Mae ymuno â Bwrdd Ystad y Goron yn dipyn o fraint, ac rwy’n llawn cyffro ynghylch y cyfle sydd o’n blaenau. Rwy’n edrych ymlaen yn arbennig at ddod â dealltwriaeth a mewnwelediad cryf o Gymru i drafodaethau’r Bwrdd, gan helpu i sicrhau bod buddiannau, amodau a chyfleoedd Cymru yn parhau i gael eu hadlewyrchu’n llawn wrth i ni wneud penderfyniadau ar gyfer y tymor hir.” 

Cafodd Michael ei recriwtio yn unol â'r Cod Ymarfer a gyhoeddwyd gan y Comisiynydd Penodiadau Cyhoeddus. Penodir y swyddi gan Ei Fawrhydi y Brenin o dan Warant Frenhinol, yn dilyn argymhelliad gan Ganghellor y Trysorlys a'r Prif Weinidog.
